How Big Is The Ocean
TED-Ed - Term 2 Week 1
How big is the ocean? - Scott Gass
While the Earth’s oceans are known as five separate entities, there is really only one ocean. So, how big is it? As of 2013, it takes up 71% of the Earth, houses 99% of the biosphere, and contains some of Earth’s grandest geological features. Scott Gass reminds us of the influence humans have on the ocean and the influence it has on us.
2. The term “One Ocean” refers to…
3. What is the world’s tallest mountain?
4. The ocean currently represents approximately ___ of Earth’s surface and ___ of Earth’s total water content.
5. Evidence of human influence is found in what part of the ocean?
6. What factors – physical, historical, and otherwise – have contributed to the traditional identification of multiple “oceans” versus the concept of a single, global ocean?
7. In terms of both physicality and perspective, what influences support the existence of singular geologic features (e.g. Mauna Kea, Challenger Deep, etc.) within the Earth’s ocean versus a continental setting?
8. Does the ocean always have the same surface area and volume? Why?

HTWW - Circuits
UOI2 - How The World Works - Circuits
In your group you will need:
- 1 battery
- 1 bulb
- 2 wires
Use your problem solving skills to see if you can get the light bulb to light up.
Think about/try:
- What happens if you turn the battery around?
- Can you make a working circuit with only one wire?
- What different energy transformations are taking place in your circuit?
Complete the sheet below:
Using your new knowledge of a circuit draw a diagram in your book which clearly shows the different energy transformations taking place. Remember to clearly label.
HTWW - Summative Task
HTWW - Summative Task:
WALT: Inquire into an Energy Source:
In groups of 2, you are to choose one type of energy (nuclear, wind, solar, hydro, geothermal, biomass {coal, gas, wood}, tidal) and carry out an inquiy.
You must include the following:
- What is the power source? What form of energy is this?
This includes a poem inspired by “The Wind” It is…….
- How do we harness it? A diagram or flowchart showing the transformations of the energy source to electricity.
This will also include an Explanatory POEM ,followinng the Success Criteria: Noun, Verb

- Possible Perspectives include: Environment, Efficiency, Geography of New zealand, visual impact, pollution, renewable/ non-renewable,
Mr Aspden will be closely marking one of your negative perspectives of your chosen power source against the following Success Criteria:
-Used 1-2 AAAWWUBIS Sentences
-Used paragraphs
-Extra, used an "ing" word to add information when writing a complex sentence.
- What does the future look like for your chosen power source? p24 - WALT - Take notes by identifying key words, then putting these into out own sentences. (DRAFT in UOI BOOK) Think about how and where it will be used, Its availability and how it will have changed, Will we use it more or less (In New Zealand), and why?
- As responsible citizens; how can we make a difference? (energy sources-renewable/non-renewable, use of energy etc. MAKE a list of all the possible ways to cut down on energy use!
